Ticha
Ticha van de Werve - born in 1972 in Bruges, Belgium.
She lives and works in Brussels, Belgium. Her creations have been exhibited in Belgium, Germany, Spain, the US and France.
She started studying art in 1988 and pursued her studies in 1992 at the School of Arts "le 75" Brussels (BE) where she joined Boris Semenoff's painting workshop. After three years, she graduated with a magna cum laude degree in Arts, Painting and Printmaker.
In 2002, at the Art Institute of Chicago (USA), she integrated the stone carving workshop of the sculptor Susan Clinard. In 2010 Ticha returned to the engraving under the tutelage of the printmaker Paul Dumont until 2012.
Each moment is an invitation for her to use art. Art is a bridge to meet yourself. In this perspective, Ticha organizes art workshops for adults and children. We can find her at the hospital to stimulate patients, in a specialized center or more recently at the museum.

l’Âme Matière
Ticha van de Werve is a complete artist, she does not claim to be a printmaker, painter or sculptor.
“Why stick to one discipline? The world is made of a variety of things. Colors, moods, lives, languages, experiences, gender and even cultures. Staying faithful to one medium, for me, is like being stuck in a room.”
Art is her life, her life is art. Her work is a spontaneous creative process where she expresses her intrigue for the human being. Her creation is based on a vision as if it were an emergency, a necessity.
The artists such as Dubuffet, Picasso, Giacometti, Penone, Berlinde de Bruyckere, Marlene Dumas and so many others inspire her but also the ancient art, the first art, the expressionism nourish our artist. Anything at any time can stimulate her inspiration to become her allies to hydrate her idea to express our individuality.
Her questioning leads her to a series of fictitious and raw faces or silhouettes whose identity she scrutinizes. Neither man nor woman, it is not the gender that defines us. Deformed and simplified, they evoke our sensitivity as our imperfections. In her work we find a dance of techniques and textures.. The scaffolding of textures illustrate the shell where the very essence of our soul nests. It is proper to each one, our virtues like our frailties which stick to us and are so difficult to undo.
The following quote from the philosopher R. Descartes resonates me:
"To reach the truth, it is necessary once in a lifetime to get rid of all the opinions that we have received, and to rebuild again the whole system of our knowledge. The path is unique for everyone, the way to reach the goal varies with the traveler." - René Descartes
My work is born from my interrogations on a society which calls for change; political, ecological, societal or personal.
Why are we looking for change; existential crisis or awareness? Are we so different from each other? Aren't we all in search of independence and freedom? How do we need to exist in harmony with ourselves and others. These questions led me to a series of sculptures on canvas.
Back in 1994, I made larvae in gas with the human aspect “statufied” on paper. Today, these larvae have been transformed into a "stone" silhouette on canvas. The canvas illustrates what we want to get rid of in order to achieve the dreamed change and the silhouette emerges in a new space; the hope of a better one. The " stone " that enveloppes the silhouettes, shows that despite our will, we feel at certain moments as if we are walled in, as if prevented from accessing it.
The serial works of “ Sur Toile “ are mysterious and full of little secrets as it is for all of us. There are different stages; destruction-reconstruction. Importantly, they depict the flaws, the wounds faced by the individual, it must explode into small pieces to reinvent itself, rebuild itself to find its truth to build the change. It is composed like an encounter, a taming between the canvas and me. Step by step a paper structure develops like a puzzle of various fragments of life that fit together.
I compose and innovate the technique when I meet a problem. In fact, it’s the same for all of us in our life. I trust that each individual has the patience and courage to gain the freedom to exist.
